THE KAMPFIRE INITIATIVE
Using short form content as the proverbial campfire.
To gather in community, get inspired, provoke discussion and take action.
Using content to generate community activism.
Kontent’s experience with our film Farming While Black shows that film can be used as a focal point for local meetings, using cinemas or community spaces to show the content. We have gained valuable experience, not only in producing the content, but also in distribution and activation on the ground. The aim is to involve communities and generate action.
Our key learning? The power of gathering in community inspires everyday people to become everyday activists. When people are inspired, they want to act. They passionately want to be useful, but so often they don’t know how. (This applies both on an individual level and also to professionals – estate managers, farmers, etc. We intend to harness this desire and transform it into real action for Point Blue.
Our experience shows that there are five steps to activation:
Bring people together in person
Provide a shared experience of watching a powerful, relevant film
Bring along participants and experts
Allow time for questions and discussion, for people to explore the subject of the film
Show them a way to take action, to get connected with an organization, and each other

PROPOSAL
We want to build on the momentum of the theatrical screening of The Roots Program film and subsequent panel discussion. We feel that uplifting the success stories of The Roots Program is a prime opportunity to champion Point Blue’s critical conservation mission in a time of cuts to environmental science and research programs.
We propose to produce a series of short documentaries for Point Blue (perhaps embellish stories from the 5 minute Roots Program film), and work with Point Blue to take them out to local communities for screenings and discussions. The campaign will showcase Point Blue’s work and most importantly generate support and action on the ground.
Of course the films can live online as well, but the primary aim of this campaign is to connect PB with the people with the most affect on our land, and those most affected by our land.

The Content
In collaboration with Point Blue, Kontent will produce four short films of approximately 15-20 minutes each. This “mini-documentary” runtime is designed to be
Long enough to highlight a problem and solution, and show a real-life human story, illustrating how the work is going.
Punchy enough to maintain everyday interest - they will assume intelligence and curiosity in the subject but no special scientific knowledge.
Allow plenty of time for the Q&A and community discussion.
Each film would look at PB’s work in their areas of focus: Oceans, Shorelines, Land restoration and Water resources
Each film will explore the problem (and solution) using human stories - showing people taking action, supported by Point Blue.
Of course each film will cover PB’s wider aims
Reducing emissions
Coping with Climate Change
Enhancing nature’s benefits
The films are not an end in themselves but are designed to be talking points. The key is that they inspire ordinary folk to join up, to show them they can take agency.

The On-Ground Campaign
We take the films out on a rolling PB roadshow. The aim is involving communities – generating action.
Using Kontent’s experience with FWB we will organize:
Local screenings
Conversion to DCP (if needed)M and delivery of files
Booking participants and diary management
Q&A with participants / PB experts
Management of CTA’s both on-ground and online
We will obviously collaborate closely with personnel and diaries at PB and report weekly on progress, but we will take the strain of the campaign, allowing PB to continue their important work.

RESULTS
Raise awareness in local communities, where it counts
Show funders and government bodies that PB is connected to the people
Drive funding, action, participation, other KPIs TBD
