Urban School of San Francisco celebrates

The 50th Anniversary of The Summer of Love.

A Kontent Films Program

This year marks the 50th anniversary of The Summer of Love... and the 50th anniversary of Urban School. How groovy is that!

In the summer of 1967 over 100,000 young people converged in San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury for what has become known as The Summer of Love.

They were called hippies and flower children. They were dismissed as freaks and peaceniks.

But what they imagined together began changing the world. The music, the creativity, and the community created something incredibly special, unforgettable, and important.

It was the awakening of a generation who began focusing on the environment, on social justice and on peace... and it all started just blocks away from the Urban School of San Francisco Campus.

Déjà vu.  America 2017 is not so different from America 1967.

'Futrhur Peace' is an event that celebrates the counterculture movement and links it to the current activism goals of young people today.

This is a can't-miss-opportunity for the students of Urban School to join in the global celebration of The Summer of Love by sharing their community and activist spirit.

POWER TO THE PEOPLE

POWER TO THE PEOPLE

The Idea

The students of Urban School will create a message to Washington by updating one of the most recognizable icons from the counterculture movement – Ken Kesey's school bus 'Furthur.'

As a work of art the original Furthur bus represents the sweeping changes that came over the country in the 60's. As people began to question traditional values and means of expression, Furthur stood as a highly visible representation of a new brand of American awareness. In a highly positive and meaningful way, its whimsical character became a metaphor for a new brand of cultural exploration.

This time around the Urban bus, Furthur Peace, will be a large canvas artwork. Channeling the spirit of the counterculture the students will decorate an outline rendering of Kesey's bus with messages and illustrations relating to current issues we face today.

They will be joined by two generations of activist, a counterculture era historian and a young graffiti artist. Together the group will create a beautiful 'modern hippie-delic' message to the President. While at work the group will discuss the history and the current state of community activism.

The final artwork will be shipped to Washington or displayed in SF during the Summer of Love celebration festivities. In the tradition of the Merry Pranksters, a whimsical metaphor – a school bus sent to educate the President.

To promote our effort a video will be made of the event capturing the making of the artwork from start to finish. A local PR effort will spark national attention.

How it works

A giant canvas with the outline of a school bus is hung in a loacation somewhere in the Haight Ashbury neighborhood like the Panhandle. The Panhandle was a favorite location for Hippie gatherings - concerts, plays and protests.

Urban students led by the two mentors will paint, draw and write slogans on the canvas, decorating the bus with current day issues and concerns important to them.

Hippie Modernism

Retro-hippie art mixes with the new street graffiti writing style. Generations coming together to celebrate the past and look to the future.

Partnership / Inspiration

We can explore working with Project Everyone and the Global Goals For Sustainable Development as inspiration and distribution/promotion.

Activism Mentors

We will find local artist / activist mentors like Lisa Law and Joel Bergner.
